The Merchant's Square

Merchant’s Square is a two-level craft and retail hub inspired by the historic shophouses along the Singapore River. Blending heritage charm with tropical modernism, it creates a riverside destination where commerce, craftsmanship, and community life come together in a naturally ventilated, light-filled setting.
Concept Inspiration
The form follows the gentle meanders of the Singapore River, creating a rhythm in the building’s massing that echoes the waterfront’s natural curves. This river-inspired geometry is paired with design cues from traditional trading shophouses, such as sheltered walkways, rhythmic façades, and intimate shopfront proportions. Openings and overhangs are strategically placed to optimize natural airflow and daylight, while river-facing steps reinterpret historic loading docks as public gathering spaces.

Ventilation Diagram
The two-level craftsman shops use louvres, large windows, and an open floor plan to encourage fresh air movement. This design keeps the interior bright, airy, and comfortable while reducing reliance on mechanical cooling, supporting both occupant comfort and environmental sustainability.

River Steps
Wide, tiered steps that lead down to the river’s edge, doubling as a public seating and performance space while maintaining a direct link to the site’s trading past.
